We have 2 strawberry pots . It seems every year we have to start over with them cause they freeze out even when we cover them with garbage bags or tarps. Does anyone have any ideas how we could get them through the winter alive, or do we just deal with it and start over next season. T/Y in advance for any help or advice you can offer. :duc

I am totally unfamiliar with winter conditions in your area, but one problem with almost all container grown plants is that they tend to be more susceptible to root damage from freezing because the roots will grow around the edges of the container they are grown in. Containers just don't have the same amount of thermal mass as the good earth.

I usually "bed down" any containers I am trying to overwinter in leaves and straw (not a great option in this instance IMO), although a cold frame of straw bales might be an option. Would it be possible to move the pots to a garage on days and nights where the temperature is quite low? If not, perhaps placing them in a more sheltered location. Preferably a south eastern exposure? The other thought that occurs to me is possibly select a more cold hardy variety. Just a few thoughts and I hope it helps! :)

rob31 t/y for the response
Our winter temps dip below freezing day & night sometimes for several weeks. We have only had them survive the winter 1 time covered with a garbage bag, if we put them in the garage or garden shed for the winter would we have to take them out every day or could they stay in there all winter?

I love my strawberry pot... This is how I solved the problem. Each year I fill the pot with new plants and enjoy through the summer. Right about now, I empty the pot and plant the strawberries in my actual garden. They winter over fine and I get an established patch going. If you were inclined I am sure you could dig up the same berries and pot again for the season! Good luck!
