Garden Master
I pulled several bills out of my wallet at the supermarket checkout counter the other day. There may have been an atm receipt or two. The checker wasn't paying much attention, looking over his shoulder and talking to a coworker. Nobody behind me ... He reaches out and takes a 5 and two 1's as I try to get organized. I hand him another 5 for my $10 and some cents purchase.
The ensuing confusion would have been comical to someone watching as he is trying to figure out why I gave him $12 for a less-than $11 purchase while I'm waiting for him to hand back a dollar bill. Communication broke down even after I said that he had $12. I finally reached over and snatched a dollar out of his hands!
I was buying hearing aid batteries and should never had made a distracting verbal comment about running out of "juice" while he was talking to someone else about ... whatever
.
Really, I have little idea what he was saying, just trying to extrapolate through the early morning confusion, spoken sounds, and mannerisms. Imagine if we were from different cultures ... speaking different languages ... In a way, we were . It's kinda funny that I seem to have quite a bit less trouble communicating with people of different cultures and using English as a second language than many of my neighbors.
Here's a funny example of the problems with English that I just came across:
