I'm not sure about mowing, however ...

I doubt that concrete would be required. It seems like it would be a good scheme for places around here with windblown soil (loess). And yet, our glacial gravel might be a good choice, also. It shouldn't be any heavier and the drainage concerns would be addressed.

Windows!? Where are the windows?! Even a dormer or two might work fine!

What do you think?

Those look really cool! There is a house near here that is built semi-underground like that. Very interesting concept. I am with you on the windows...way too dark in there for me. I think a few goats could keep those rooftops mowed!

Those are earth-sheltered houses in Keldur, Iceland built in 1193 by the Icelandic Norse.

The scarcity of wood and need for good insulation was solved by sinking structures into the ground; it is a lesson for sustainable architecture that is fascinating!

Scroll down on the second link and you will see other neat examples, including @lesa 's mowing machines!

Fantastic! And looking at the inside, they were pretty cozy looking. I would personally prefer more windows, but with 6 months of night, they probably wouldn't do much good anyway.
