What I've learned is I have the WORST luck with sweet corn... but everything leaves the popcorn alone! So we had a great harvest this year. Just have to buy sweet corn from someone else.
Me too Vfem, this was going to be my last attempt if it didn't work. It did better then ever for me, in that I had a handfull of ears of corn, but they were soooo buggy and sparse I decided to feed them to the chickens. I'll chip the cobs and stalks for the mulch, but no more corn growing for me, takes too much space, time, energy (me and soil) for what little I get from it.
I feel ya on this one! This was my second year and I got maybe 6 ears so far. There might be another 6 out there now...but that'll be it. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! One more year, then I give up! lol
I stopped planting sweet corn two years ago. When my corn was ripe there were 5 or 6 veggie stands up and down our roads selling it cheaper than I could grow it. I just purchased a bushel of fresh yellow sweetcorn (about 55 ears) last week for $10. That's about $0.18 per ear or $2.16 a dozen. I can't grow it for that. Our shelves in the pantry are filling up.
I won't plant it here because it only attracts unwanted critters, and its usually more trouble than its worth. Even if the critters (mostly deer and coons) decide to sample it, then next thing you know they are stomping holes into the squash, and eating my maters.
