why I can't grow cucumbers and squash!!! :barnie

I planted straight eight cukes - the plants look fantastic - running all over the place (all over my peppers and up my fence) nice green foliage, tons of flowers, but the cukes have been tiny - about an inch long for the past two weeks - I should have TONS of cukes by now!! I've gotten a few pickle cukes, but they aren't doing anything now. My squash was a total flop - the plants didn't get big at all and no flowers to speak of. This is the third year with no squash or cukes! :hit What the heck am I doing wrong?

In your area it's possible that your soil is too far on the acid side. Either highly acidic or highly alkaline soil can tie up the nutrients in the soil. They are there but not in a usable form for the plants. Do a soil test and add lime as necessary. Your Ag extension office can advise you. They should be in the phone book under county government.

have you check for the vine borer? That is why I can't grow squash. But the cukes may need some hand pollinating so you can tell if it is a pollination problem. After that could it be too hot? Or not enough water?

I can grow cukes like nothing. I need help trying to each them manners so that they stop strangling everything else in the garden.

Probaly clay soil - I have a bag of lime. I said I haven't had cukes, but I remembered I did grow a bunch of lemon cukes last year.

How warm is it right now? If I'm not mistaken, cukes and squash don't do well when it's super hot, or super wet.. Cukes will also "stop" producing if you don't pick the veggies that have grown- they'll set a few, and if they grow beyond "normal", the vine thinks it's all done and doesn't continue.
That's all I know..

95 to 97 degrees. Boiling hot - I hope my poor chickens will make it thru the summer - I had one that was in heat stress when I got home last night. :(
