I killed my cucumber starts

I planted 2 cucumbers and at 3 weeks they looked great. They had 2 true leaves on them and I set them out, I think they burned up in the sun. I started them on my porch which only gets 4 hours of sun. Did I put them out too early? Can you not direct sow them? I want to plant more this weekend. TIA

I've always gotten the best results on cukes and squash by sowing right where I want them. They aren't that easy a transplant.

In your zone you should have no problem planting most things right into the ground, you've got a good growing season. (Unless you've got issues like I do with birds/squirrels making off with the seeds as quick as you get them planted!)
