Ok... so my radish seed supply has been dwindling, so I planted a bunch of radish in June with the intention of letting them bolt to seed for me. I am happy to say I have 100's of seed pods on my radishes right now so I can harvest fresh for next spring (I have one last round of seed available for fall planting).

Should I let them stay on the plants and dry there, or about how long until I remove the pods? Can I remove the whole stalk and store it in a place where they can just hang dry on the stock before I remove the pods? I've never collected seed from any root veggies or lettuce type plants before?!

I leave mine on the plant until the pods dry up. Then I cut them off and spread them out in the drying room (aka the breakfast room) until I get around to extracting the seeds from the dried pods. I bet hanging the pods on the stalk would work great as well. :)

I was hoping hanging the stalks would work. I have limited bed space, and I really want to start prepping that bed for spinach and more radishes for fall in a couple weeks. I bought they will be dry by then.

Did I mention how pretty radish flowers are... so purple and light colored. Like a collection of violets on a stalk! Even my husband asked by I planted such pretty flowers in my veggie garden instead of the front yard... he didn't know they were radish flowers!

I just looked back at my gardening journal (thanks TEG folks) and I planted the radish seed 3/20 and harvested the seed pods 6/16. Of course the weather was much cooler at that time of the year. Please keep us posted as to when the seed pods are ready to be harvested. I am thinking there may be a bit shorter time between sowing and harvesting at this time of the year.

Yes the little flowers are very pretty. I grew a red globe and a white tip and the flowers started almost white with just a blush of purple which gradually deepened.

Great idea to grow for seed this time of year also. Hmmmm...supposed to rain tommorrow........ nahhhhhhh I don't have an extra inch of space out there right now anyway.

I think my husband came up with an awesome idea though... next time I want to plant something for seed and I'm going to let it flower, instead of wasting good plant in the garden space, I'm going to go ahead and put it in a flower bed so I can look at it and then collect the seeds when ready!!! :D
