I've had problems with fire ants since I've been gardening here in South Carolina, controlling them with chemicals always bothered me since the chemical used to kill the ants might poison the plants I was eating. Well after watching a video on you tube last year suggesting the use of an orange oil and water mixture and pour it directly on the mound I decided to try it, it's 100 percent natural and IT WORKED!!!
One downside tho, pure orange oil is very expensive so you may want to use it just for your gardens, I found it on line for 19.99 a quart. No more chemicals for me..:) If anyone can find it any cheaper please let me know. The brand name of the orange oil I bought is "Medina". :D

That's really good to know. Thanks. Do you think that any of the citrus household cleaners would work as well? On second thought it's probably not pure and it's probably more expensive in the long run.

I did try a citrus cleaner and it didn't work, plus who knows what kind of chemicals are in the cleaners. BTW, you can also use the pure orange oil as a cleaner, only difference is that it is pure.

Did the orange oil kill them, or did it just make them move elsewhere? -Wendy
I think it killed them, I could be wrong but the next day when I scratched at the mound there was no movement or any sight of ants...
