The trend line in the US News ranked colleges is a little disturbing. Better schools, less sleep?!

I remember the one time I completely choked in a final. It followed an all-nighter, totally rare for me. I hardly knew how to spell my name that next morning!

My common sleep deprivation moments came on Mondays. I usually worked weekends. I learned to keep my mouth shut in Monday classes! It was enuf for me to show up and try to take notes!

As a high school kid I remember realizing, somewhat embarrassingly, that I averaged 9 hours of sleep at night. It seemed almost required. Maybe I was a late bloomer ...

I don't know what to think about our military academies and their students' sleep ... if lack of sleep represents "challenging" and that is supposed to be good, I'm in a really good olde age!

These charts like this are so misleading when they start assigning cause and effect. Maybe there are other factors, such as that the type of person who goes to those "highest ranking colleges" is a high IQ over-achiever who needs little sleep?
I always like to refer to the study that shows that "eating ice cream causes rape." Someone saw that the incidence of rape went up in parallel with the increased consumption of ice cream. They assigned cause and effect. What they didn't take into consideration was the season: Summer. Summer meant eating more ice cream. But it also meant people leaving windows open for ventilation, thus increasing the likelihood of someone breaking into a home and raping the inhabitant.

If they had not used the monitors, I could have thought self-reporting might not be trustworthy. Someone at a highly ranked school might only say they get little sleep just touting their overachiever efforts.

I suppose that it could be assumed that underachievers sleep more but they might just party more or be skilled in wasting time ...

You know, imaging the future of this kind of monitoring can get a little scary.
