First class of basic canine obedience training this evening. I'm pretty sure DH is going with me, so he will hopefully hear what I don't and vice versa. I'm a little nervous about Penny meeting several other strange dogs, but she is very social, and needs contact.
She either has had some training, or picks up my cues easily. We have taught her "sit" and "roll over" and she comes when called, most of the time, and will "stay" at the top of the stairs when I go outside via the basement, to care for the chickens, unless it's been a while since she has been outside, then she gets so excited, no amount of commands will keep her from bounding down the stairs and skidding around the corner.
This will be interesting.

That sounds like a lot of fun! I've always wanted to take my dogs to a class like that and pick up some good pointers. They have usually done all the basic commands very well except "stay"...that's one that's a little iffy if there are things going on that make them excited, much like your Penny. I'm just not much good at teaching stay and could use some work on it.

You'll have to let us know how it all goes and how they get her to stay.

Lucky you have it right, don't know how many times I have been asked, what trainer will train my dog. None a trainer trains you, and you work with your dog. Don't worry about her around other dogs, that why the trainer is there. have fun spending time with Penny. Good luck and have fun!!

It was pretty interesting. Penny was the oldest dog there; most were a few months old. There was a two year old, also. The trainer realized pretty quickly that Penny was using the nylon collar to her advantage, pulling, and let me try a prong collar. I told her we had one at home, but the one I had purchased seemed bigger and heavier. Penny did much better at heeling with the borrowed one, and I ended up buying it, of course. This evening we worked on "watch me", "walking on a leash" and "sit."
By the end of the lesson, Penny was doing pretty well, actually, and had settled down around the other dogs. The trainer wouldn't allow us to let the dogs sniff each other's butts or faces, so basically, we had to keep them all apart from each other. (There were one or two who hadn't brought vaccination/worming records, so I think she was just being cautious.) Penny really wanted to play with the others, and was frantic at first.
There is a doggie day care associated with the trainer. I may take Penny once in a while so she can play with her own kind. All in all, it was a little unnerving at first, but I felt we learned something. We have homework to do daily, working on those taught commands.
There was a Australian(?) Labradoodle there, just about 3 months old. He looked like a stuffed animal, so cute, with the softest curliest coat you ever saw. Like minky fabric, if you know what that is. I wanted to bury my face in it.:love

Good Job. Hopefully you are both quick learners. ;)
We took husbands dog to class. I went also to learn as I am the other Human pack leader! Dh allows him to NOT follow commands so often that dog now basically ignored him until he is YELLING. I only need to give him the eye and a firm (not loud) Sit, stay, come , down. And he obeys. Consistency . Have fun.
