... do you have an "Aly?"

I noticed the name on a street sign about 2 years ago. It was in a new development and just led to a pair of parking lots. Smith Aly or something, I just checked: it doesn't appear on any of 4 internet maps, just that street sign.

What does appear is an Aly in a little podunk town, nearby. I just realized that it is an abbreviation. Like Ave is for avenue and Blvd is for boulevard, Aly must be for Alley.

So, now we are naming our alleys? Like that, with that spelling, dropping 2 letters in a 5 letter word? By the way, it is an unknown word to online Merriam-Webster and my spellchecker. Doesn't that mean that it actually has no existence?

Won't this contribute to me getting lost in my olde age?

I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, please ask me to wait.

Steve, do you think it has anything to do with our emergency response system where everything has to be named? If here is a car fire in one of those parking lots, the fire department could find it on their GPS.

Last week , I was driving on a major downtown Vancouver, Wa. street looking for an address for a floor supply business that had 1/8" thick " Jet backer board" (a light weight, moisure and fire resistant Magnesium Oxide underlayment to go under floor tiles) . There was road work for 6 blocks . All address numbers seem to be well hidden if not missing altogether from store fronts. I passed that business 3 times without seeing it since I had no way of knowing what numbered block I was actually on. Then had to drive another 2 blocks to take a side street then go through an alley that eventually led me to the supply company. I guess that the fire truck driver has to see smoke comming out of the building to stop then rush in to fight the fire. :th:th

Nyboy, I agree with you. There are six houses on our private road. Two of us have our house numbers displayed, four do not. People often stop to ask who lives where since they can't tell by house numbers. I've had delivery people thank me for displaying mine. So far no emergency vehicle has stopped to ask.

You'd think businesses would want their street addresses prominently displayed so people can find them. How hard is it to display your street address so ambulances, fire trucks, and even policemen can find the right house in an emergency.

Alex, I assume yours is prominently displayed?

Yep I display number in more then one spot. If I have a emergency, I want help to have no problem finding me. With crafts kits house number can be a family project. I have a set on mailbox on road, a set on lightpost and set on house by front door.
