i'm having an odd relationship between a tomato and a sunflower. at first I thought the sunflower was going to shade out the tomato. now the tomato is using the sunflower as a trellis. it's blooming, setting fruit, and reaching higher through the sunflower. I might have to try to repeat this in the future if the relationship continues to work

That is interesting!

Sunflowers are supposed to be allelopathic - or, at least somewhat so.

A tomato can be a pretty tough character. Maybe it just refuses to be suppressed.

I had planted lots of sunflowers in the next row over from my tomatoes one year, before I had heard about them being alleopathic. This was about 2 feet apart and my tomatoes were not phased by it at all. Perhaps the effect is selective to certain types of plants and weeds. And the sunflower roots only go so far out. I do notice less weeds and grass in the sunflower patch.

the volunteer sunflowers I have growing must not have enough omphy to suppress growth, because they're in several locations and I see no sign of inhibition of other plants going on.
