i'm having an odd relationship between a tomato and a sunflower. at first I thought the sunflower was going to shade out the tomato. now the tomato is using the sunflower as a trellis. it's blooming, setting fruit, and reaching higher through the sunflower. I might have to try to repeat this in the future if the relationship continues to work

While we wait for BJ, I will relate something that happened in my sunflower patch.

I don't know if it shows any compatibility between the 2 plants but Jimson weed showed up there last year. I wonder if it wasn't carried in by the birds since they spend so much time in the sunflowers. Anyway, I thought it was that "other" Solanaceae weed (buffalobur) that I have seen 1 or 2 of in recent years.

This year, one of the plants made it to blooming. It had a flower like Datura so I think these are jimson weeds.

The buffalobur is an annual with yellow flowers and lots of thorns. It is uncommon here, I'm quite sure. Also, these are the first jimson weeds in my garden. The buffalobur didn't but the jimson weed showed up in the sunflowers.

it didn't turn out so well. the sunflower got too big & shaded the tomato too much. poor production from the tomato.
my tomatoes are done now for the season
