$390 worth of eggs in the incubator this morning! 3 weeks. 3 much-too-long weeks until I have $390 worth of chicks. Well, okay, $24.63 worth of chicks more realistically.

Did you get them through the mail? We had a terrible hatch 2x from shipped eggs.

The mama chickens do 1,000X better than the incubator. In fact, I fell a little guiltydepriving the eggs and prospective chicks of real parenthood. The only reason I am using the machine is because I am upping the anty. Hens can only do 10 of their own eggs, and there are less than 40 breeding adults living, so this breeding is extremely important. After this year, I will never use the incubator again.

Ever.

Broody hens do it naturally ! incubator is a little time consuming where we have to watch the temperators and turned the eggs over often ! but a fun hobby to learn !!

I have to fiddle around with everything to have half a clutch hatch ~ she automatically does everything just right and gets a full hatch
chicks grow up in an eerily red environment filled with pathogens ~ she shows them how to forage in the green grass sweet sunshine for juicy bugs and worms
cockerels mature and get killed in cockfights with their father ~ cockerels grow up with instructed submission and the pecking order is beautiful and perfect
electric bill through the roof during incubation ~ corn bill through the roof during incubation
