Maybe you weren't looking for it and nobody has been asking but have you come across interesting garden information, lately.
Here is a real expert on things horticultural: Brent Loy. He is one of the University of New Hampshire people behind their melon variety development but here he is talking about winter squash.
Why Some Winter Squash Tastes Better Than Others
Maybe paying attention to fruit set makes sense if I have some latitude for variety choice. And, maybe not doing that was the problem years ago when there were problems with the flavor of acorn squash. I blamed the soil but it may well have been harvesting at the wrong time.
Here's something else. I've come across this online store several times when I was looking for a vegetable that I knew nothing about. You could also use its info and images for researching tree fruit varieties. I'm not endorsing their commercial activities, which I know nothing about but if you want to see most any edible plant (or turkey eggs ):
