Any iris lovers here? I'm on a labeling spree and would love to have the proper names for these two. The stems of the yellow one are about 2 feet tall, and the stems of the other one are close to 3 feet tall. Help?
I'm not a serious iris geek but bear in mind that there are lots of cultivars that look alike (and some that one might argue *are* alike LOL), particularly if all you're going by is flower pics rather than also foliage behavior/type, bloom time, etc. So even in teh best case scenario all you could get is "looks pretty similar to ____", not a real identification. If it were me, I'd settle for "the yellow iris" and "the dull purple one with white falls and yellow beards" (which is quite attractive, btw!)
They are probably relatively modern cultivars rather than old-timey things, though, as the falls stick more or less straight out sideways rather than going down vertically like the older irises.
They are very lovely no matter the name. I was going to say they might be an old variety that where nameless in my day!
good luck with the labels. that is something I always say I am going to do and never get done!
You might try this site . They have a pretty extensive database of plants. That mauve iris is pretty distinctive. I've not seen any like it around here. The white is what makes it unusual.
Thank you everyone. Wow, I never realized how many varieties of iris there are! I could spend years just getting familiar with the basics. Foliage behavior, eh? I had no idea.
Carol Dee, I am determined to get the significant plants in my yard labeled because I'm basically a beginner gardener and the lady who used to live here was really into her yard and there is some wonderful stuff that I keep forgetting the names of, LOL!
Journey, thank you for the links! That Lady Fire iris looks exactly like the one I have. I think I'll show the pic around a little more and see if there's a consensus to be had.
