I have a butternut squash (yes I only ended up with one) I don't know if it's ready to be cured for winter keeping or not.

How do I cure it?

Just place it somewhere dry and out of the sun and let the skin harden a little, then store it somewhere cool and dark, not too much humidity, but also not too dry. You won't want it to freeze, so store it where it will stay cool but not freeze.

If you poke it with your fingernail and it doesn't break the skin, it is good to go.

What journey11 said. Give it a poke with your fingernail. Those ripe enough for storage shouldn't allow your nail to do any damage to the skin.
