cucumbers like shade as long as they get some sun every day. We used to plant onions right outside the door in the shade at my dads house.

Best thing is leaf veggies -- lettuce, spinach, chard, even beets if you are not too ambitious about your expectations for the roots. Also mint, sweet cicely, and a few other herbs.

Some things like lettuce and chard are heat-sensitive and would need careful selection of varieties, and avoidance of summer crops, for your region :)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Carrots will take some shade but most things need at least 5-6 hours of decent sun.

With at least 3 hrs of sun these will grow:

Salad greens, such as leaf lettuce, arugula, endive & cress.
broccoli
cauliflower
peas
beets
brussel sprouts
radishes
swiss chard
leafy geens, such as collards, mustard greens, spinach & kale
beans

Hope this helps.
