Hi all.. We purchased various plants at the farmers market that were ready for the garden a while back.. Some died, some lived before we were able to take care of them.. I think this one is Kale -- but wanted to check.. Is that correct?

The leaves are HUGE and the bugs don't seem to like them nearly as much as the spinach & chard..

We've eaten lots of bok choi and none has been nearly as big as this stuff or the same color.. The leaves on these are probably 8" wide by ~12" long.. Big dudes..

Might be a cabbage that has not headed up. These are thousands of varieties of each crop so it may be a lesser know variety.

I generally know what we did buy and certainly what we did not buy.. I know we did not buy bok Choi or Cabbage but we did buy Kale and a few other 'greens'..

You know what.. We did buy Collard greens and I think that's what these must be after poking around on the web..

Thanks all.. Not sure what I was thinking with Kale.. I guess I just had it in my head.. My neighbors were the first to eat some when we trimmed it back about a week ago.. Needless to say it grows like a weed and is almost the same size it was then -- >2' across. I guess it likes the hydroponic water I've been occasionally giving it..

Collard wraps are delish...
Use the leaves just like you would a tortilla shell.
You can take out, or "beat flat" the stem so it bends easier.
Fill it with all kinds of delish goodness, roll it up, and enjoy!

Rick, I think it might be kale, Portuguese kale - - "Tronchuda Beira."

Take a look at this picture of the leaves from Renee's Garden Seeds (click).

You should know that cabbage, kale and collards are all in the same family - sisters, one could say. Some of the other brassicas are just cousins ;).

I have sown seed this Tronchuda Beira for the 1st time this year. I put them directly into the garden and am hoping for the best. The picture on the seed packet looked a lot like the plant in your photograph.
