Simon our resident rodent has awakened from his long winter's nap. I wondered if Simon would remember me, but it is back to business as usual as if six months had not passed by. Just call: Good stuff Simon and there he is.

He may be stuffed because he put away thousands of seeds he scrounged from me last year, about four hours a day of begging. His borough must be the size of Carlsbad caverns to hold his stash.

Jack, Simon may soon return as El Libertador leading a very large family to lay claim to what you thought were your resources!

I've been thinking (and, posting) about our marmots. They are never in a hurry to come out of their dens.

You don't have to say, "good stuff" to them! Good enuf is the lawn grass - that is what I always see them eating first. Then, they do some traveling, with vegetable garden tours high on the itinerary.

My guess is Simon has an advocate in that beautiful granddaughter. While feeding a ground squirrel isn't unusual, the den labeling has to be done for the Superman shorts shopper.

She knows he is awake and she is coming for dinner tomorrow, I am sure that feeding Simon will be high on her agenda.

Steve,
I recently watched a documentary on chipmunks. They are on their own at six weeks and are solitary and territorial. They watch each other, raid each others cache and have fierce fights over territory. Simon has a few battle scars from some of his buddies.
