I really like to use Italian seasoning (the dried stuff) but would like to know how to do my own. On the bottle it states:

Ingredients: Marjoram, thyme, savory, rosemary, sage, oregano, and basil.

I am growing basil and have oregano outside (if it made it through the winter) I have no idea what to do about the rest of the stuff.

I have never even seen marjoram or savory. So if you are really dumb and want to grow an herb garden how do you do it?

I am very good at growing tomatoes and peppers from seed. I have grown parsley, dill, basil and cilantro. I live in Ohio so I can not grow marjoram or rosemary as a perinnial. Savory isn't even in my Organic Gardener's A-Z Guide.

All of those plants are for sale at my local nursery, and you can order the seeds and grow them.

That is how I got my oregano last year. Do you think I can get them at someplace like Lowes or Walmart. I would recongize thyme and maybe rosemary. The others I am not sure.

Thyme and savory (either summer or winter) are usually easy to find in the herb-plant selection at Walmart or wherever, if that's where you'll get your plants.

Marjoram they may or may not have, but since it is not honestly much different than oregano, you are unlikely to miss it.

Honestly I think the best thing is just to try various ad hoc mixtures of whatever herbs you have, and see whatcha like. You may very well come up with versions you like BETTER than the packaged stuff ;) In particular, consider adding garlic (fresh crushed/minced/grated, or dried powdered/granulated).

Good luck, have FUN :),

I got a bunch of herbs last year from Home Depot. They had quite a variety of potted plants. I got several kinds of basil, stevia, lemon thyme, variegated sage, etc. I also started alot of herbs from seed - parsley, marjoram, basil, dill, lavender, etc. The lavender, oregano, and marjoram said they are tender perennials so I will see if they lasted the winter. I covered them somewhat with leaves but the chickens didn't like my placement so moved the leaves to their liking. LOL

Well, I went out and checked and my oregano is starting to produce a few leaves so it will be back. As for garlic, I add it to everything. :love I usually add double portions because then I add less salt. That is the next thing I am going to learn to grow. But when I was looking to planting stuff everyone was out and I am supposed to plant it in the fall anyway.

As for herb that I have. Not really any because last year was the first year and I didn't really know what I was doing anyway. This year I think I'll do better mostly because by screwing them up last year at least I know more what questions to ask.

I had trouble with some of the seeds growing last year. They were given to me by someone who had herbs so it might have been the seeds. I may just start with plants and then learn how to dry them.
