I just started some John Baer tomato seeds on 2/4/10 and they sprouted on 2/10/10. I was wondering if anyone has tried these before and what they are like. They were a bonus seed packet from Jung's last year and I don't know anything about them. Thanks for you input!

P.S. Did anyone else have a bad batch of Viva Italia tomato plants last year? Mine tasted awful and I ended up feeding them to my chickens!

Thanks Ducks4You! I have been lurking for a while, I'm not a good poster. Just usually look to you guys for good garden info. :D

I've read a little about John Baer/Bonnie Best. There seems to be some controversy about John Baer since Jung's made it more widely available. As best as I can determine ;): it is a determinate Bonnie Best . . . and a relative of Wisconsin 55.

I grew Viva Italia once. That was about 15 years ago. I had been growing Lunch Box which is a nice saladette and can be very sweet when we have a nice, hot summer. Viva Italia didn't compare. I don't grow paste tomatoes, however. Perhaps it is useful for that purpose.

I don't know if the above even amounted to 2 but that's all I've got . .

Thanks Steve! I'm not familiar with Bonnies Best either! But thanks for the attempt.
As far as the Viva Italia goes, my local grower/friend assured me that they are not supposed to be like they were last year and he got stuck with half a commercial green house full of them that were intended for sale at the local fresh market. I got off easy be comparision. I learned to have more than one variety at a time!
