Finally got my Johnny's seed catalog yesterday, and was a little disconcerted by it. I guess I didn't realize that it caters to commercial growers and farmers, rather than home gardeners. Still lots of good info, but the seed selections may be slanted towards picking and shipping qualities, rather than nutritive value and suitability for home gardens. ??
Regardless, it still was useful in putting me to sleep last night. zzzzzzztomatoeszzzzzz?z?zzzzkohlrabizzzzzz?z

Johnny's is an interesting success story.

Rob Johnston was a kid in his early 20's when he started the company. I got an early catalog back in the days when I had just learned that there were other seed companies besides Shumways. Shumways was purchased by another seed company but, you know, that catalog looks a lot like what it looked like back in the '60's!

Anyway, Johnston always seemed to be interested in something new . . . and new . . . and new! Trailing and developing new varieties just goes on and on. Ownership of Johnny's has changed. It is now wholly owned by its employees. That took awhile but they did it. I hope they are successful ;).

Organic growers must still be a big part of their client base. They have a ton of greens and lettuce - things for sprouts, too!

Packets range from large to small so the home gardener hasn't been squeezed out. Not at all :).

I do find all those micro greens interesting, but most of them taste like weeds to me. :hide

got home late late last night and there it was waiting for me on the computer desk, unpacked took a shower popped a beer<oh did that taste good> sat down on the couch while the dw was re heating dinner started to look at it closed my eyes just for a second, next thing i know its 4 am. well heck no reason to go back to sleep opened the fridge grabbed the plate and re re heated dinner amazing how meatloaf tastes good even on the 3rd heating....

after that started to flip though the pages had a good chuckle reading page 2...
direct seeding of veggies
how many seeds needed for a average 100' row/acre
how much a average yield per 100' row/acre

and of course the same for transplanted veggies..

told the dw that we are going to do a bigger zucchini patch this year and was going to plant 300 seeds and we should get about 200 lbs.. oh her look was priceless. :hugs

the clock is ticking till spring, time to dust off the germination table

I haven't gotten my Johnny's catalog yet. So far just Parks and Seed Savers Exchange have come. Johnny's does have the largest selection of greens that I've seen. I enjoy flipping through it. I've not ordered from them before though.

Dec. 21st is almost here. Shortest day of the year. Then things will be on the up and up again. I am a solar-powered optimist. ;)

There is probably a different catalog for the home gardener.
there isn't one that i've noticed online when i shop around what they have. their shipping is crazy too for just seeds. wish they had a different price if that was all you were buying. i don't want to pay $6.95 every time i want a few packets of seeds from them, who just happen to be a few hours away from my home. i've been enjoying my seeds coming from Ohio Heirlooms, Pine Tree and Baker's Creek the past few years. i did get some stuff from FedCo Seeds a couple years ago and their prices are good too and shipping was reasonable.
