A few weeks ago we received the dreaded notice from Time Warner that our promotional package had expired and our monthly bill was going to increase by more than twenty dollars. Each year they do this to us until finally, our bill was more than a car payment. Every time we call and ask for a better rate they say sorry that is the best we can do. We wanted to drop the phone service, but get this, they said if we dropped the phone service our cable bill will actually increase.

We said if you can't give us a better rate we will have no choice but to cancel cable service. Their reply was: I can do that for you now if you would like. (The straw that broke the camel's back)

We transferred our phone to viatalk, my son's brother in law owns the company and is providing the service for nothing.

I installed an outdoor antenna on the mast under my ham antenna. That got us local channels, along with several other channels I did not even know existed, 20 channels total. And, the picture quality is far superior to the cable quality, as the signal is not compressed as it is by cable.

We purchased and installed our own modems, $40 for cable and $17 for wi-fi. (no-brainer)

We had Amazon Prime anyway, so we added Netflix, Acorn, Hulu and Sling, Sling alone has 40 channels. Bottom line, we have far more to watch than we had on cable, and we are saving in excess of $1200 a year. Unfortunately, we still have to use Time Warner for our ISP, as there are no other choices in our area. That cost is $49 per month. I read that their cost to provide internet service to each subscriber is about $1.92 each. Some profit.

New York State announced last week a major class action against Time Warner claiming they have been defrauding customers since 2012 by selling internet service based on speeds their equipment is not even capable of delivering. In my case I am paying for 50 mbs, my measured speed is 17 mbs. They offer their Turbo Speed 300 mbs, however, the state claims they do not even have equipment capable of delivering that speed. They are constantly trying to get you to upgrade your speed. The state claims customers are getting 1/3 to 1/2 the speeds they are being charged for, sometimes even less.

When we called to tell them to drop the service they offered to reduce the bill by $20 dollars, then, when we dropped off the cable boxes they offered a new rate $60 dollars less than the one they said they could not improve upon.

My wife said: "too little, too late." We are officially cord cutters and loving it.

Sounds like a good fix. I wondered what was meant by: "Cord Cutters"
It really feels good, as we have been putting up with their BS for decades, but no more.

Also, I read that American households are dropping cable in record numbers and moving to streaming, which is the way of the future. Cable providers are bleeding customers because of their package deals. Who wants hundreds of channels that they don't, or can't watch. We do not speak any of the languages they offer.

Looking at the bill, they were charging $3.25 a month for a guide to let you know what was on the channels. What is up with that?!!! Ten dollars for something else. What is that we asked? That is channels above 100 was the reply. Well, the channels above 100 are the same as the channels below 100. The bill is prepared so that you don't know what you are being charged for and they are evasive when you ask.

They must wonder why they are one of the most hated companies in the USA.

I had cable one time years ago when they first ran a cable into this valley. I use to pay three months at a time, the lady at the cable office would scold me each time I came in to pay. One day I was driving in and saw someone running from a power poll to a pick up and drive away. When I turned on the TV there was just noise.
I called and asked "Did you turn off the cable to my house?" "Yes, do you want to be reconnected?" No ma am!

I installed a large dish, that was good for a long while.

:thumbsup

We went through something similar with DirecTV. We went the antenna and ROKU route. Cable is not available out here. After we cancelled we got all kinds of offers to come back.

I'm glad you found a better alternative.

I have heard that Time-Warner was the most hated company of its kind. I am surprised you were able to get them to disconnect you so easily.
Congratulations on cutting that cord!
Netflix or Hulu wouldn't work where I live. Not enough.....speed? ...band width?...juice?....available here in this cultural desert.

My wife has never been happier with the TV. She loves the old shows like: Happy Days, Taxi, All in the Family, Archie Bunker's Place and Laverne and Shirley. She is upstairs now watching some show on survival in Alaska that she watched on cable along with Law and Order. So, in the long run, we can watch what we want when we want for the most part. And, save more than a thousand dollars in the process.

Remember when TV was free :old
I do, we had three channels that featured mostly "local talent" most of the time. It was awful, but all we had. Friday night: Teenage Barn. An awful band with teens with squeaky voices and greasy hair trying to sing. :barnie
