Lesa, I could send you the Mountain Cottontail rabbit that ate my cabbage and squash. He would be competition for the vine borers.
Don't know why Benjamin Bunny left the pumpkins (& the few squash in with them) alone.
I was afraid that I would have to grow more pumpkins to take up the space on the ground the property owner made available. It filled up fairly quickly since I set up the rows for rototiller weeding. Turned out, he used less than half of his side but I didn't want to seem ungrateful. I think it is very likely that I will be sampling some pumpkins for pie this year, anyway.
(I mean other than that the knife might just fall on that little guy hiding under the chair .)
Does anyone have experiences growing their garden mulch?
See the oats? Yep, on that side of the pumpkin patch, I grew some oats. By the time that picture was taken, the oats had been pulled and tossed over to act as a mulch on that one side of the patch. It worked fairly well! By that time, it was impossible to get in there with the tiller and kill any weeds - my method for weeding in that new garden extension this year. (I did have to get in there with the hoe once .)
Not if they go so long that they go to seed, tho'. Then, it is just a weed crop, don't you think? I have plenty of experience there :/.
You might see that the oats had produced seed. I've been very apprehensive about that Avena nuda (Hulless Oats). I was told by a gardener that he grew it one year and now he has "volunteers." Those would be weeds. But, I think that I really had it under control the time I grew it before and the seed matured. This time, not so mature (no homegrown oatmeal for me this winter ). Still, I suspect there are some seeds that could germinate.
The oats were not planted with the pumpkins, just along side them - then pulled.
Yeah, I was joking about the weeds. They were very prolific this year due to my letting the front garden by my shed lay fallow last year and not taking care of the weeds before they went to seed. So, this year when I planted my spuds up there they were crazy thick. I kept ahead of them until my potatoes got big and I got busy, then it was all downhill. I'm discouraged to see how much the bindweed took over. I guess that will be project for the next several years. :/ I would take volunteer oats over most of my weeds any day!
