KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

A Kilgore woman is recovering from shock after a deer crashed through her windshield.

"It started like it was going to cross the road ... then it took off and ran toward the car. And the next thing I know it was in the car," says Alice Hunt.

Hunt was driving to work Thursday morning on FM 2276 when she spotted the deer near an intersection. She says she slowed down almost to stop but was surprised when the deer began to charge toward her car.

"I think it broke its neck. It bent the frame of the car," she says.

Hunt said her immediate reaction was to get out of the car as fast as possible.

A few years ago, she says her husband's uncle was killed when he hit a deer and the animal kicked around in the vehicle and broke his neck.

"So that's all I could think about, 'I gotta get out of here,' " she says.

Hunt's neighbor, Shannon Baton arrived shortly after the wreck.

"I was on my way home and she was just a woman in the middle of the road and I thought, 'Oh my god. Something's happened,' " Baton says.

Initially, she thought a tree had struck the car or fallen on a person.

"I thought I was about to see a badly injured person and I thought, 'What am I going to do? ' " she says.

Hunt's phone was in the car, underneath the deer so she used Baton's phone to call her husband. Highway Patrol was also called to the scene.

Hunt was uninjured but says she was shaken up.

Fm 2276. Holy cow. Jumped in the car with this lady. Thank you Jesus she’s okay.

My parents where going to visit my sister. My mother was driving when a deer leaped in front of car and she hit it. When I heard about it i called my mother to make sure she was ok. She started telling what happened and burst into tears when she said there was nothing she could do but hit deer. Thinking she was crying over killing a animal I said dont cry I am sure the deer didn't feel any thing. Her reply was I am not crying about deer i am crying about $6,000 in damages to my car. My mothers not a animal lover.

In most states it is illegal to pick up road kill. We used to own a furniture store and Sheriff deputies would come to the back door and whoop whoop their siren. This was the signal for one of our workers to open the back door. The deal was; they picked up a road kill deer, they then came and picked him up, drove him to his house where he dressed the deer. He got half, the deputy got half. He had a bunch of kids, so the meat helped him out. We never docked his time being gone, we didn't care.

Years ago, I was driving on a 2 lane mountain road in N Cal. with my wife and our 3 little kids... a sign on the side of the road read " YOU are ascending into Paradise " ( Paradise , Cal.) , when a doe jumped from a 4 foot tall overgrown brush covered bank and straight onto the front hood of my car denting it severely . Her hind hoof whent through the car's grill and through the rediator , then steam rose up and onto the windshield... I couln't see a thing as I stomped on the brakes and skidded to a stop at the very edge of a steep drop off of the road. Then within 5 minutes, a Highway patrolman drove up, and he shot the doe flayling just over the road edge. He and I then retrieved the doe and loaded it into his trunk and took it to the nearest Indian reservation. The officer then called a tow truck to tow our car to a repair shop. We then had to get home via an overnight stay at a motel, then a Greyhound bus ride home the next morning which took us to our town by 9:30 in the evening. Took 0nly 3 1/2 days to reserect our car and ready for me to pick it up . Took another day's bus ride to again reunite with my car. :caf
