I went out to yard sales on Saturday and picked up a twin bed for my daughter. We decided to refinish it for her room. I talked them down to $35 for it, and now my husband is off sanding it (we started sanding it on and off since Saturday... so exhausting)! He's using a guy's workshop we know because he builds custom furniture as a hobby.

When he saw it he says we got an amazing deal at the bed is mahogany when we were told it was probably oak, though it didn't seem like it to me.

Now I'm just wondering about how old it is, and I'm kicking myself for not buying the second one they had!?

Definitely not oak. just looking at the picture I'd guess ash or birch. The slats and posts aren't necessarily the same wood.
It looks old enough to go back to the maple craze of the 40s/50s but that dark streak is off for maple. It's great to find old furniture made of real wood. Everything these days is that crappy particle board.

Yes, the wagon wheel motif makes me think 40s/50s, and it looks like a maple stain at least; not reddish or grainy enough for mahogany. Wouldn't hurt to swing by to see if possibly the other one didn't sell.

Thanks guys, I didn't think it was mahogany either, but I'm not exactly good with woods or wood in general! LOL

Anyways, I'm guessing it is maple. Its lighter, and that dark streak is actually some stain we hasn't totally removed yet. I see very little to no wood grain once the stain is removed.

We may swing by the estate sale if they are open again this weekend. Hubby wants to see if the queen size bed frame they had was still there too.
