When you landscape, do you plan the entire area, or do you do small pockets at a time? I would think it'd be better to plan my entire yard, but it's a daunting task.

I have found that it is usually better to look at the entire picture, even if you only want to work on small sections at a time. I use to just buy plants and then come home and look for places to put them. Now I know that if you have an actual plan for everything, the overall look will be more natural and pleasing to the eye.

I did what Tess did for years and finally, tired of trying to keep everything up, I did the total yard. I planned it out with help and made it as maintenance free as possible. It took quite a while to get it all done but it was worth it. There's very little to do and in the spring and fall, it's beautiful. Do the big picture first and then work from there.

I have an overall general plan and I work a bit towards it every year as I haven't had the funds to do the entire project. I've been focusing on one area at a time and using some annuals for color, but adding new perennials each year. My goal is to have all perennials and fairly low maintenance by the time I retire.

My thought is depending on how many flower beds you have, I have 3 and I do them all separate, one of them is my strawberrys and the other one has some flowers in it but I still am looking for other things to put in there. the other one I have not touched yet still thinking on what I want to do with it. pin-tress has some nice ideals on flower beds. you might take a look there for more ideals. Just my thought
