Does anyone save potatoes to plant in summer? I have some Kennebecs I bought but didn't have room to plant. They are sprouting sitting in a bag in the basement. I am thinking about putting them in the ground where I take the Yukon golds out. Would that be a bad idea?

I think it would be a good idea. You need something to get you out of the house so you can enjoy this nice weather. :hide

I've tried with poor success, but my problem is getting them to sprout to start with. The few times I've had some sprout they grow and produce at least some potatoes. I don't have any place cool enough I can store them like you have. They are a "cool-weather" crop and it's anything but cool this summer. If you can keep them from drying out you can probably get some potatoes from them. In the worst case you learn it's not worth it, so you don't worry about missing out. In the best case, you are happy.

I don't eat potatoes that have big sprouts. By then they are too soft and I don't care for them. So if you are like me, you are going to throw them out anyway. Go for it! and plant them.

Yeah, they are a bit shriveled and yucky by now. And the money has already been spent, so no loss there!
