So, this year we are hitting the tomatoes hard. BUT, I had rotten luck with my starts this spring... abouy 80% didnt even come up (last year I had 100%?) and the ones that did got killed when the coffee table they were on tipped over (long story, kids live in my house) so, I am direct seeding (spring is early here, soil temps are great, and the growing season is long.) but over the weekend was taken by a bout of laziness. So I grabbed a 3x5' piece of plastic lattice (I hate lattice, all of it that was on the house when DH and I got married is now in a pile in the back shed to be used for pea trelisses) and decided to use it for making tomato plots. So, every 3 holes I planted seeds. Kept things evenly spaced and tidy, and when I was done with one plot I just flipped it over and started again so that things were in a row. VERY convenient!

Very organized! I can't imagine being able to direct seed tomatoes! On the very best year- I wouldn't harvest any! Enjoy your garden!

What a clever idea, Sparkles! That would be perfect for spacing direct sown seeds. I have a contraption I found in my barn when we bought this place that is basically a shovel handle with an 18" wide 2x4 centered on the end. I don't know what the previous owner used it for, but I use it to help work out plant spacing in the garden. Anything to make it a little quicker to plant and to mark a nice row! :D

My DH made on of those. Good not only for spacing, but for tamping in the seeds. I think he used 1x4 so it was lighter.
