I was thinking about what I want to grow next year in my garden...I was thinking of trying lentils but I know NOTHING about growing them. I've been googling a little but would like to know what you guys think or tips and such.

Does anyone on here grow lentils??

Can they be grown in michigan?
Are the worth trying to grow? Or do you need ALOT of land to grow them?

Thank you!

I would be interested to hear more about this, too. We're vegetarians, so beans/legumes=cheap protein!

I have some black-eyed peas that I plan to dry to store, and they are doing very well. I'd like to also try black beans next year...

ETA: I don't know if you've found this in your internet research, but this link has some helpful cultivation info: http://www.victoryseeds.com/catalog/vegetable/lentils/#Cultivation

The woman who does the test-plot column for I think Harrowsmith did a piece on lentils a year or two ago. She lives in possibly a bit colder location than you - IIRC it is about USDA zone 4, in E ON or S QC, I forget - but IIRC she was unable to get very much of a crop due to season length. If I get a chance I will dig thru my stack of old magazines and see if I can find the article for you.
