We have a small bush, and each year it blooms and gives my favorite flower...but only for about a week. Is there anything I can do to prolong/increase the amount of blooms on these delightful little bushes?

You don't prune it, do you? If you wait too late, to prune you might be cutting off next years buds. A week or two is about what I expect out of my lilacs. They grow really well in zone 4, might be too warm where you are?? Enjoy!

Lilacs came to the horticultural world from Persia. We won't mention the modern name .

Anyway, southwestern Colorado and my part of the world have fairly close to the same flora. I assume that's true with northern New Mexico. (One of these days, I'll have to not just race across the southern part of the state to visit Dad's hometown, Las Cruces.)

Maybe the elevation is stressful. Lesa says they can take some cold winters. I know that lilacs appreciate plenty of water. They probably grow in the canyons of Ira . . . uh . . . Persia. All-American zone 5 semi-desert city, Spokane, Washington considers itself the "Lilac City."

That lilac is another place that wants to see your hose running slowly and for a good long while now and then, DG.

Good idea. I don't think I have watered them enough. Maybe after the frost I will get out the root waterer thingie (completely technical name, I am sure!:/), and give them a good soak.

You sure do know a lot about New Mexico, digitS!:)

(...come to think of it, you know a lot about everything!!!!_ :bow
