I have missed out on sunshine and serious gardening by painting a ceiling. About five years ago, I painted the textured living room ceiling. It made a big difference but it's a big job! A big job especially if you are olde, slow but trying to get through the mess in one day.

The interior walls of this 115 year old house are lathe and plaster. I'm sure the ceiling is the same but would they have covered it, like they did the walls, with paper?? At any rate, the previous owners decided to blow on the texture and the dang granules are pulled off by this homeowner's remedy for a dingy ceiling - a paint roller. Pulled off, moved, re-glued, dropped on the floor, dropped on the diy homeowner!

We moved all the bedroom furnishings to the middle of the room and covered them. I had several new tarps which had never been out of their sealed bags but proved to be as dusty as the Sahara! Shoot. The comforter was taken out and beaten like a rug and will have to be cleaned!

I had to climb on the bed to paint around the light fixture. DW caught me up there again this morning with my paint brush. She brought me a cane ..! I was squinting up at the ceiling to find misses and dab at them. I'm sure it would have been a comical sight. Good thing I don't look much like Mr Magoo ;).

We should have migrated to another bedroom rather than just replace the comforter and run the vacuum. The 70°f blue sky afternoon turned into a star-spangled evening and the windows were closed. I woke up at 2:30 with plugged sinuses and bad heartburn. I don't know how they were related but sleep was impossible until the stomach med and zyrtec took effect.

Done, looks better but not a lot of fun ...

Steve
edit: BTW, how do you get semi-gloss latex paint off a light fixture?

Steve in wealthy Victorian homes the ceiling would have been papered. It was a way of showing off the home owners wealth. Wall paper was much more expensive then paint. Covering with gold ( gilding ) was another way. Mark Twain called the time period the gilded age.

Why is it that those previously simple tasks are now major events? Since DH is feeling so much better, he is tackling some upkeep tasks around the house. It took him all day to clean out the kitchen sink drain trap. One thing leads to another, and tools aren't where they are supposed to be. You know how it is......

Thank you, NyBoy.

We had the darkest green wallpaper in the living room of one farm house. The flowers on it were huge! I thought that it was "normal" but, of course, old fashion - and wouldn't have wanted it ;). The house had wainscoting. In another farm house, the dining room had knotty pine. I liked that! I doubt if either house was older or much older than the current one ... time marched on, somebody painted the wallpaper ...

It IS great that your DH is feeling better, So Lucky. I dread having something stuck in the drain. On my back with my digitS' trying to pull things apart inches from my nose - it ain't easy!
