....and it's my first attempt at growing brocolli. Won't wonders ever cease?
Also found my first Colorado Potato Beetle of the season, too. But he's gone on to a better place.

I never got my brocoli to flower this season. I don't know why? maybe I over fertizlied them. either that or they were too old. I am hoping I will get a better chance this fall.

There you go, BoggyB! It shouldn't be long now.

My broccoli plants are still flopping around in containers tuffing out the weather . . . they could have gone out in the garden by now but I can't seem to get away from the greenhouse with the tender things, protected from the wind and cold.

Congratulations on that potato bug! If you have deadly nightshade around your garden look on those to see if they have any potato bugs. That's where the potato bugs 1st show up around here - it seems to be their preferred snack.

After they are in great numbers living off the nightshade, the bugs rally to the call and head for the Solanum garden plants. I can anticipate the problem just by checking the nightshade situation every few days.

Congrats, boggy! You are going to love growing your own broccoli! Keep a close watch on it- it will be ready to harvest in no time. I am sure you won't be surprised to hear that my broccoli is still in a seed packet!! Maybe this weekend. I think the snow and hail are out of the forecast for a few days!!!

Way to go! Broccoli is a great crop, easy to grow (just lots of food and water) and nutritious as well as tasty. Keep that thuricide handy though. Catterpiggles love them.
Here in San Diego I'm too late for the coles. Even my pak choy is bolting. I'll have to wait for September to get them in.

I can't remember the name of it but there is a Chinese green related to pak choy where you eat the flower shoots instead of the leaves. Bolt baby, bolt. ;)

The bok choy flower buds and stem can be very sweet and tender.

About the only problem with it is if it's the size of a soda straw or smaller. But, even baby bok choy, can grow a rosette about 12" in diameter and send up a stalk about twice as big as my thumb.

It just depends on when the mood to bolt hits it . . . :) , the stalk and buds can be the very best parts of the plant.

Hoodat, you may be thinking of Gai Lan. It is very similar to Broccoli Raab. I find Gai Lan a little difficult to grow and Broccoli Raab is a little strong flavored. I just appreciate the Bok Choy, flowering or otherwise :p.
