Besides craigslist, is there anywhere else I can look to find either a young buff orpington or young australorp rooster?

Get on all social media and start talking to friends. I got 3 roosters last year free from a friend who was buying birds and didn't want to keep them. He also free ranged and lost his flock to raccoons mid year, bought 6 birds from a farmer and didn't want the lone rooster. Another friend couldn't sell 5 of her roosters--I know her from BYC, and she lives close--so she gave them to me--this was 2011.
People say they'll keep the roosters, but often change their minds.
I bought 2 buff orpington 1 month old roosters at Rural King--again, nobody wanted them--for $1/each. I just sent them to freezer camp at 2 months old, and they'll make a nice meal. That IS what people do with birds that keep them long enough. People get tired of them as pets.

Check on BYC. There is a section under 'Buy/Sell/Trade' for free-rehoming. It's almost always FULL of roosters looking for homes. Also, if you're planning to go to the gilmanor swap, jump on the 'Where am I, Where are you' section under Virginia and let them know you want one. I bet you will get a bunch of offers from breeders - they only want a few roos but it seems that most hatches end up nearly 1/2 boys.

You can also check on www.petchickensofvirginia.com Everyone there is in VA - many are near us.

OR... if you're willing to wait a little while, and are flexible on the breed, I'll have chicks a little over a week - I'm not entirely sure what breeds I'll come home with but if any turn out to be roos, they'll have to go. I'd love to know that they had a ready home waiting.

Ducks, thanks for the suggestion. . I have messaged a few people to get the word out that I'm looking.

Cane, I'm looking on BYC now and I will definately check out the link. I am sort of flexible on the breed but I would definately perfer 'lorps or orpingtons. Please keep me in mind if you have any roos in the next couple of weeks and let me know what breeds you end up with.

My chicks are roughly 3-4 weeks old so I would like a roo that is around that age but that won't stop me from bringing home something that is older or younger.

My layers are mixed. IMHO they are healthier that way. For 2013 my layers are RIR x Welsummer/EE.
This year's hatchings will be:
RIR x Welsummer/EE crossed with EE (both my roosters are EE.)
OR
EE/EE bc I have 5 EE pullets coming in on May 1st.
I've pretty sure that EE's are a little like Quarter Horses and genetically outcrossed. Auracaunas are a South American bird that lays blue eggs. The pure stock has no tail feathers. Unfortunately they are light layers, so they were outcrossed to make them lay more. So, EE's lay a lot more blue eggs than Auracaunas do.
I'm enjoying this year's olive eggs that are tinted blue on the inside of the shells.
If you get a rooster with green legs, there's a good chance that he has some EE in him. That was my tip off.
I'm gonna be keeping pullets with green legs. Last November I sold off 1/2 of my young layers--15. Somebody at the auction paid $65 for a flock of 15 hens just at the onset on laying.

Canesisters, have you been to the South Hill swap before? The gilmanor swap is a good 1 1/2 hours away. I was looking for some place a little closer.

Stony, its a shame youre not closer. I have a couple of mixed roosters 10 weeks old today. Id give you your pick. The daddy is a Speckled Sussex and the mamma is a Black Australorp.

Another place on BYC is the Virginia thread in the Where am I? Where are you. section. Ill be surprised if Cane doesnt find one for you, but maybe someplace to look just in case. Its pretty active.

I love to give you my black australorp rooster. he needs a large harem. he's too much rooster for my little group, but he's a heck of a rooster - and gorgeous.
