Ok, yall are going to love this...

The past several days Eva has been doing something weird so I went to my friends on Keeping A Family Cow forum to ask if it was something to be concerned about.

Here's what I asked:
For the past couple of days Eva has nearly fallen asleep in the stanchion. At least.. that's what it LOOKS like.
I'll be about half way through milking and I'll hear soft snoring. I look over and she has her nose MASHED into the side of her feed pan. Eyes open - but for all the word sounding like she's sound asleep.
I'm ALL FOR a happy, contented cow that is THAT relaxed - but the thought of her knees buckling and dropping on me while I'm milking is disturbing.
I usually start poking her, saying her name, giving her belly a little shove - whatever it takes to get her to raise her head and look alert again.
I know horses sleep standing up more than laying down... but do cows?

Is this 'normal' or should I be concerned?
Does anybody else's cows fall asleep during milking??

Turns out, through several responses, she's not exactly relaxed, she's stoned!!!
There are acupressure points in the nose and pressing releases endorphins. She's getting high in the milking room!
My darling Eva-love is a nose-mash addict! :th

I had about 6 years of milking when I was a kid.

No, I have no memories about this but it sounds like Eva is just one very contented cow.

I remember that our cows were happy to be milked. They might stand out in the field and bawl, "here calf, here calf." Then, I would go out and slowly drive them in to the corral. Once there, they were only too happy to come in to be milked. I can remember that they had a little flake of hay and some pelleted supplement. The feed wasn't all that much of an attraction for being there.

We did have some heifers that didn't like people having anything to do with them. Dad sold them.

I wonder if Eva's behavior is all part of a cow's feeding nature and instincts. They have to be strongly motivated to eat, just by how their digestive system is put together and their usual diet. Eating and masticating what they have eaten takes up a huge part of a cow's life. Milk production reinforces instincts and all with increased hunger but that can't be the sum total of it.

Don't we all enjoy just getting our faces in a lovely plate of food?

Same thing for horses that crib. Sucking on wood releases endorphins and they like the high. Hmmmm..... is it a misdemeanor or a felony for a cow to get high?

Last week i was in dentist chair getting knocked out tooth worked on and fell asleep. She thought it funny that i could be so relaxed

That's pretty funny that you have trouble sleeping at night in a comfortable bed, but you can sleep in a dentists chair. :p

That’s because you enjoy the night life. You don’t enjoy work. One you can't wait for. One you can't wait to end.
