My nephew and his friend where a big disappointment last Sunday planting trees for me. I decided to change the way I was paying them, they where getting flat rate for the day. I told them today they where getting paid by trees planted, they didn't like that, but where digging like crazy. Got 4 times the number of trees planted then last week. Told them I was looking in to cattle prods, was told if I even tried, prod would be inserted into one of my body cavity. Oh well I think money motives better then pain anyway.

It sounds as if you finally have their number. Yes, they want to earn money but if they can 'earn' it without working. Paying per tree properly planted was a stroke of genius!

I would have skipped all thoughts of the cattle prod. Punishment may work for dumb animals who lack the ability to question and reason, but most people work best for positive rewards. Even if it is nothing more than John Smith's "No work, no eat" philosophy.

I made sure they where properly planted, I bought out a chair and overseen planting. I was going to make them bring out chase lounger, but thought that was pushing it. Maybe when trees get big a hammock would be nice.

Nyboy, I have sort of caught your bug. I went to Home Depot just to buy a bag of potting soil and I ended up buying an ultra dwarf Honeycrisp apple tree. My husband gave me this look like "what in the world are you doing?". I remembered that Digits likes Honeycrisp apples. Fortunately I already had a hugh pot where I had a maple that I put in the ground a few months ago. The bad news is that it was the pot that I was going to use for your fig cutting. Guess I will just have to find another one. ;)

That's funny!
They do make hammocks with their own stand you know, so you don't have to wait. ;)

Motivation is a wonderful thing!! They will have to dig fast, to keep up with all your new tree purchases!

Daily or hourly rate usually leads to lots of smoke breaks and texting the girlfriend for a certain family member of mine. By the tree or overall completion of the job is definitely the way to go. And no pay until the job is done! That way the expectation is set up front. Maybe you need a bullwhip instead. ;)
