We had to put Lucky down last night. I'm not quite sure what happened. Monk and I gave Lucky and Gretchen a bath while we cleaned out the brooder tub. I didn't dry Gretchen off because she's almost completely feathered in, and I dried off Lucky a bit. I put their food in there but not their water because they're so messy. I didn't plug the heat lamp in either. About 15 minutes later Sam comes out and calls me in. Lucky is laying on her side limp. I pick her up and wrap her in a towel to try and warm her up. She kept scratching at her face. I gave her a big bowl of water thinking she might want it. She started to perk up, but if I put her down she would just lay there and couldn't get up. I picked her back up and put her back in the towel and she flipped herself over and started flailing her legs and wings and couldn't breath. Sam took her from me and broke her neck to put her out of her misery. We buried her next to the ack porch and in the spring we will plant her some flowers.

I feel so terrible! If I would have dried her off better or turned the lamp on, or left the food out or put the water in..... The kids took it really hard and even Sam cried. :(

You shouldn't feel guilty about this- quite clearly you take excellent care of all your critters. There are so many medical things that can go wrong- that we have no control of. Birds are the strangest of creatures, it is not unusual for them to die without warning. I am guessing some kind of heart issue. Be kind to yourself and know that you did everything you could, and more...

To have something happen so suddenly it had NOTHING to do with anything you did or think you didn't do soon enough. Lucky had some underlying condition that you didn't know about until it struck. I hope you can find some peace in the fact that she had the very best life she could since she lived with you, and you can remember how she enriched yours.

I'm very sorry for your loss

Thanks guys... I still do blame myself for not putting the water in there. My best friend told me that I can't blame myself because even if she DID have water it may still have happened. :hit

I feel terrible for Gretchen. She's not ready to go outside full time yet, so we put her out with Lily the lame duck during the day. She's also smaller than the others, so the Pekins get after her a bit. We put her in at night since she's not feathered out all the way yet... and I can hear her chirping. It makes me so sad. :(
