Hi, I will be making a garden in an area with alkaline soil but I want blue berries. So I was thinking to make a raised bed just for them and do mulching to build the soil but to also put in lots of pine bark chips.

do you think that is a good idea? any other ideas to make soil acid that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I live in the woods basically, and we have tons of pine trees..I went and gathered a bunch of needles for my wildflower bed, to protect the seedlings from any frost..It was free!:p The needles added lot's of acid and my wildflowers are taking off...Peat moss is good too... Just a quick idea..others might have more ideas too..

Yeah I dump used coffee grounds in my blueberry beds. :D They look very sturdy and strong already, and mine were recent transplants.

Can you explain how you "dump" coffee grounds on the blueberry patch? Do you mix it in with the dirt or just pile it around the plants?? I have just been putting mine in the compost pile, but I would separate it, if it would help my new bushes... I put in 50 of them a couple weeks ago. Thanks!
