so lucky
Garden Master
I bought new giant Marconi pepper seed this year, even though I had saved a lot, because I was under the impression that Marconi and Giant Marconi were two different things, and that the Giant were hybrid.
I planted a few of the old seeds, and the germination was fine.
When I planted the plants in the garden, I mixed them up a bit, planting the old seed plants with the new.
You know, when the peppers were first forming, I thought they looked awful long and skinny, not the fat ones I was accustomed to seeing.
But once they started turning red, slightly behind schedule with the normal fat Marconi's I knew were from the old seeds, I forgot my wariness. I thought maybe the "hybrid" giant marconis were just shaped a little different than the non-hybrid, plain old marconis.
I had eaten a few of the earlier maturing, fat ones, but now today, I picked some of both and chopped them up to freeze. I took a bite to see if the ones that were not bright red yet tasted just like a regular green pepper.
OUCH! Hot! Not Marconi!
I had already mixed the fat red ones and the skinnier ones in the same bags to freeze, so I just marked them all as hot peppers, but I am not happy! I tasted a nice red piece of the new batch, and they are just as hot, if not hotter, than the green part.
Any idea what I planted? They are very straight, about 8" long and 1.5" wide at the shoulder. And did I mention hot?
Right now my nose is burning, my lip is burning, and I am not a happy camper.
