Weren't you visiting somewhere in the Great Smoky Mountains with your brother and Dad, Major'? It might be a nice time of year to be at a higher elevation.

@Chickie'sMomaInNH yours is a way too high latitude but so is my garden. Watching the eclipse at Madras Oregon with Mt. Jefferson as a backdrop does sounds good. I wonder what things would be like in Hells Canyon on the OR/ID border for a summer day on the Snake River ..? Too bad the Weiser Old Time Fiddler Festival isn't in August ;). Hey! The shadow goes right over Stanley!

I enjoyed the 1979 eclipse by going out on the Palouse Hills in eastern Washington.

You may be able to "see" the moon block part of the sun in VA, @canesisters . Virginia won't be in the moon's shadow.

That is, if you will be wearing your welding goggles.

Don't you be looking at that sun, any part - down to a sliver, without something to protect your eyes.

Yeah, so is the Old Time Fiddlers Festival.

It's best to be prepared with some real protection for the eyes. There will be this thought, "oh no!! I'm going to miss it!!" Maybe your area will have just the right amount of cloud cover for safe squinting but that isn't likely in late August.

We will have the public health people telling us not to look directly at it. Then, we will have all these people decide that nobody should be telling them what to do. They will have damaged eyesight. Those people should be told that the event is 22 August and that they should be sure to watch it then.

When we have an eclipse, it is a 3-step process.
1. all rejoice and prepare the tinted glass.
2. Activate any sect. They shout about the "end of the world", but they do not forget to collect money from people who want to save their souls.
3. arrive on the eve of the clouds that cover the sky at the time of the eclipse.
