Math Question About Age

Those poor moms giving birth to 1 year olds !!

Not poor moms, Nyboy. The culture decrees that a child is one year old at birth. Gestation is still the same for those moms as it is for humans throughout the world.

To make matters even more confusing, consider the horse. Every horse is considered a year older on January 1 -- the foal born at 11:59 pm on December 31 is exactly the same age as the one born after midnight on January 1. This age accounting is a big THING when it comes to racing. The difference between a two-year old and another two-year old can be a lot of growth and development.

Nyboy, don't you remember all the confusion surrounding the turn of the century? How could it be the start of the 21st century when the date was 2,000? Well, we were working in the 20th century from 1900 (+ one nano? second). Therefore one fraction of a second past midnight the world was working on the 21st century.

It is not technically a math question just because the question has numbers in it. Only to those of us who are Math-challenged does it look like math...and, therefore, impossible for us to solve.

It is 'definitions' related to time in physics rather than counting in math. Okay, counting works when definition is in question.

That's why I counted on paper. I think that was pretty clear.

I remember a 6th grade bonus question on a math test. If you put up a 100' long fence and set your fence posts every ten feet, how many fence posts do you need? Let's see, 100 divided by 10 = wrong answer. You need 11. You need a post at each end.

Then you get the smart aleck that says, the question did not require a straight line. What if you make a 20' x 30' enclosure. You only need ten fence posts for that. Still, wrong answer. You'll need an eleventh so you can put in a gate.

I find that making a sketch or putting it on paper in a table or some other way you can represent it can really help. And yes, it can still get very confusing.

I had this same counting problem when incubating eggs. I didn't know there was a day "zero". They still hatched fine, just a day late.

At least now, @Nyboy , you can say you are playing with a full deck.
