Nah, I learned on Last of the Summer Wine that the English thought it was necessary to colonize the world because of miserably cold weather and inadequate architectural design. Yes, there were few "comforts of home" ;). This is why @canesisters 's and @secuono 's Virginia was founded!

And, here is something that the researcher (or, the author) is missing. Animal protein is much less expensive from milk. Less resources are used in the long run than if the animal is killed for meat.

Most of northern Europe isn't exactly a fruit and vegetable paradise, either. Turning the cows loose on perennial grasslands, makes sense. By the way, slash and burn agriculture was common in Europe at that time.
