Other than using garlic to lower blood pressure, I confess I know nothing about medicinal herbs. But I'd like to learn! Can anyone recommend a good book that will tell me about medicinal herbs I can grow in my own garden--how to grow them, dry them, prepare them for use, and what to use them for? Oh and how much to use? Can they be used as remedies as well as preventatives?

I looked on amazon.com and saw so many titles that my head is spinning. I think I really need a beginner's book--basic and simple information that I can apply from the get-go with some hope of success.

I am a TOTAL novice to this subject and figured someone here is bound to know way more!

Thanks for your help and suggestions!

:D

Rusty, I am all for using medicinal herbs, however I read a good book one time that answered all your questions, but it had a very honest author that also was clear to point out the dangers, such as reactions to other medications, bloodpressure issues, allergy to some herbs...on an on.. I had the book on loan and no longer remember the title, but I know they are out there. I think if you start by going into Rhodale books first, and I think Readers digest has a book on herb uses etc. I think the Rhodale books would be more thorough, however, they may not point out the conflicts, so be sure to research before plunging in..
Ok, that is enough from this old nosey grandma ,good luck!
Oh, dont forget to search on ebay and save $$$$

I have a book called Making Plant Medicine by Richo Cech that gives very specific directions on how to make teas and tinctures & such, along with descriptions of what medicinal properties herbs have. I confess that I haven't put much of it to work, except to make tea, but it's very informative.

I've ordered 2 books--Making Plant Medicine and The Complete Book of Herbs--from amazon.com.

Thank you for the suggestions. I would never have found that first one if I hadn't known to go look for it. It sounds perfect. And the second one seems like a good general guide to all herbs, just what I need to get started. Now I just have to wait for them to arrive. It's snowing here, so I guess I shouldn't be in a rush to run out and plant stuff!

:thumbsup
