Looks like one to avoid... I would check very carefully before encouraging that one...

Here's another instance where a common name can be confusing when it is is used for more than one type of plant.

"Mile a Minute" vining weed is Persicaria perfoliata ( formerly Polygonum perfoliatum ), it has thorns and is a relative newcomer in the noxious weed category on the east coast.
See this article:

Then there's the ornamental perennial vine commonly called "mile a minute" which is Polygonum aubertii also known as Silver lace vine. It's one I've grown, but lost twice over winter, and if I remember correctly I believe Lesa has a beautiful specimen of. It has lovely white blooms in the summer, and no thorns. :)

So, obviously not the same plant, and I'm guessing that Desertcat was probably thinking of the perennial ornamental vine.

Good point, thistle... Mine is supposed to be called "Silver Lace Vine." What I have calls for full sun, though...

Sounds like you have the GORGEOUS

SILVERLACE

Silverlace is one of the most beautiful vines. They are very trainable. Get some nice supports for them, and use those plastic ties. They will intertwine quickly, and if you are good at keeping up nearly every day or two, you can actually braid them.

They are great for things like planting at a mailbox or onto a wooden fence. At least one kind is good for growing even in Montana zone barely 4, and they do make beautiful little sprays of flowers that can nearly cover the whole plant.

These are not any kind of weed, but I suppose there may be varieties less pretty that grow too well.

Their growing habit is similar to a very vigorous Clematis, and in fact would be great planted together. Just cut the Silverlace back but not the Clematis nearly as much. Climbing Honeysuckles grow similar too.

In a gallon sized pot with bound roots Silverlace will be a much smaller vine, but still very rapid, and Sweet Peas can be trained to grow along with the Silverlace.

Huechera and Lady's Mantle make great companions at Silverlace's feet, and will make a flower spray garden area!
