I have recently become fascinated with the idea of having a moonlight garden. I was wondering if anyone has tried one and what types of flowers show best at night?

I've never thought of a moonlight garden, but what a charming idea! :) I looked it up and some plants that flower at night include the moonflower, the nocturnal daylily, night phlox, yucca, and angel's trumpet.

Thanks for the flower ideas. I have never heard of a nocturnal daylily. I will have to do some research and see if they will grow here.

A friend of mine uses twinkle lights in her moonlight garden. Her daughter thinks they are "fairies."

What a wonderful idea. I can just imagine, swimming in the pool after dark, having a glass of wine and visiting the moon garden. I'm interested. Thanks for the list of flowers.

I agree that it is a lovely idea. I wish I could do something like that as well, but it is not feasible with my set up. It makes me curious, though. Maybe I'll do some research on this, too.

If you have a deck or porch you could always do a container garden instead. I initially thought about doing one that way, but I'm afraid the cats would destroy it. They have enough fun jumping in and out of my potted herb plants.

I would have to put in a statue of Persephone, who is the Greek goddess who is credited with creating all the nocturnal plants and flowers such as nightshade and others mentioned here while she was locked up in Hades' underworld. I also think a garden filled with white flowers would be beautiful.

Interesting, I have never heard of a moon light garden. I better not let my wife know about this, or I will have another project on my to-do list! :) I think a water feature would be nice for a moon light garden, and do not forget the seating.

I love the idea of a moonlight garden. You could put white daisies in it, too, but that's my favorite flower, so naturally I'd say that. I can see all sorts of light colored flowers blooming, with an interesting little pathway of tiny white lights sprinkled throughout.

The idea behind this garden is to grow plants that can be experienced at night both through sight and smell. A moonlight or night garden contains primarily white or silver plants, as these colors reflect the most light and will glow in the light of the moon. Fragrant plants add to the allure, mystery, and enjoyment of these romantic gardens. Moonlight gardens are excellent ideas if you entertain in evenings, if you work by day so have little time then in the garden, or just want a space for meditation or relaxation.

Try silver and gray plants in a moon-garden, too, such as lamb’s ears, Artemisia, Dusty Miller, and licorice plant.
some plants for moon garden -

white snapdragons, iris, delphiniums, lupines, crocuses and snowdrops, Clematis ‘Sweet Autumn’, Dahlias ‘White Perfection’ ‘Eternal Snow’ and ‘Playa Blanca’, Coneflower ‘White Swan’, Rose ‘Iceberg’, ‘Lace Cascade’,‘Sally Holmes Antique Climbing’ or ‘Lady Banks White’
