What do you use as mulch, in your flower beds? I like to use pine needles, because I have access to a lot of it. Have you found anything that is best to keep weeds out?

I have used pine needles in the past but azaleas don't like too much pine so, I have gone to landscaping fabric and pine bark mulch. I use the pine bark mulch because termites don't like it and we have had our share of termites at my house.

I use the red cedar mulch that I pick up at Home Depot. The look of it goes with my landscaping better than other types of mulch. I don't use Scott's anymore, though. I bought that on sale a couple of years ago and it was really inconsistent and looked terrible.

Right now I do the same thing Chickie does, but I'm working on building up compost. If you get enough compost, you can mulch with it as well as fertilize, or so I hear.

I thought about doing compost, but I just was not sure about it. Does anyone use pebbles or stones? I always thought the pebbles looked nice, but do weeds end up poking through the pebbles?

I also use red cedar mulch, it just looks nice and neat. I use to have pebbles in the flower beds, but my dogs liked to kick around the stones. It just started getting messy, so I brought in the cedar.

We use mulch too - we buy it bulk by the scoop at our local green house. I think this year we might try brown or black. We have always used red in the past. We also thought about putting down black plastic and then planting the new flowers (in holes in the plastic).

The plastic sheets or paper could be used as the mulch, but there's a little difference between them.
