This year the columbine is stunning. But it gave me a surprise baby! The two plants are a light purple and dark purple. The new little one is rosey! Anyone know what is up?

Very pretty Carol Dee! I have a clematis the color of your baby :) .
Must be a throwback from a large gene pool. Columbine mix and match so readily! That dark one is stunning.

Could be some recessive color genes or incomplete dominant that produced that color. No idea though I'm not that up on color genetics of Columbine. :idunno

Were these plants you bought or seeds you saved? Hard to say without knowing what the parents are, or their lineage.

Beautiful flowers though I've always been a big fan of Columbine

Jared.
The light and dark purple where plants I bought at a nursery. They come back each year. This is the first time I have offspring blooming. :) I shook seed from the pods into the bed last summer.

The rosy colored one is beautiful, but my fav is the pale lavender. Don't you just love shady flower gardens? My columbine, sweet William and bluebells are spreading well, and so dependable. Just gotta try to keep the stinging nettle out!

shade gardening is fairly new for me. my place has been full sun for so long. the last few years have finally started to have enough shade to qualify as shade or part sun. my east side garden is my favorite right now. it is the one with the shade gardening happening.
