So, I thought it would be fun to grow some lemon grass... I purchased two pieces of it from the grocery store. Unfortunately, none of the selection had even a fragment of a root. I bought it anyway. I placed it in a jar with water, for about a month, and then put it out in the greenhouse (in the water) for another few weeks. It grew tremendous roots, and I have now planted it outside in the garden. I will let you know how it does over the summer!!

Oh, that is cool! How much of the bottom of the stalk did you have to have then?

I have one I started from seed that is on its second year now. They do not like winter indoors with my woodstove, but won't make it outside either. So much babying, but it is worth it. I LOVE the smell! I'm going to try putting some in soap!

Putting that scent in soap, sounds like a great idea! I figured I would use it as an annual- no way it would survive our winters!
The "bottom stalk"- how to explain?? To me, it looked the entire plant, without the roots. So, I guess it was one complete stalk.... I have two planted. I might trim them down a bit, since I didn't to begin with.
The scent is also used to bait swarms of bees!

I grew 1 from seed...started with many seeds and many seedlings and this is the lone survivor. I'd like to have a giant herb garden, but what I like and what I end up with are two different stories. Maybe I'll go buy some too, since that I haw I start most my other herbs...it's cheaper to buy the live herb in the produce section than to buy it from the garden supply centers.

Usually when you plant it that way the main stalk slowly dies off but a shoot comes up beside it. It's a bit late in the year for most places but if you want some in the Spring let me know. It grows like a weed here in San Diego.

Irony for my is my yard is all weeds and I can't get the lemon grass to grow, lol. I haven't had grass in years in front and the chickens/ducks make sure I have none in the back. I made a garden in my front yard one year. Best onions I ever grew!!

Lemon grass is very frost tender. Mine is just barely hanging on in the shelter of the kitchen window ledge, in behind the screen of snow peas. I remember to water it occassionally, and am hoping it'll do well in our summertime.
