I had a sprinkler problem in the squash and punkin patch. The water missed several zucchini plants in near record heat and yours truly didn't notice.

The squash beetles moved right in. Bad enuf to scar the fruit.

I hit them with pyrethrin and only found 2 bugs the next day. There are more and likely eggs, also. They will get a few more days and I've got a Bonide product that I'm interested in trying. It is neem oil with pyrethrin. I hadn't thought that they could be mixed together ... one/two punch and that should be the end of the line for the squash beetles.

Your son might need to cut them open at first. What I miss about having hens is the clean up of any unwanted or bad food. My dogs only get their dogfood, now I feel bad throwing out food.

I found one zucchini plant with squash bugs and will be back today looking at the other plants, including the cucumbers and melons. I don't remember ever seeing a problem with that pest and those plants but this looks like it will be a good melon year and I'm not about to let that go to nasty, grey beetles. (Or, the striped cucumber beetles if they show up.)

Investigation won't be much fun. I'll have to be right down on the ground looking at the base of the plants. Spraying is tough. All in 95° afternoon heat, the WS says.

Short acting as it is, pyrethrin has worked quite well in the past. I try to hit them but the vapors alone must do some of the bugs in. I was once told be an exterminator that it was a combination that is used on cockroaches. Pyrethrin drives them out of hiding but a contract spray residue kills them. It would be good if neem could work that way.
